Southern Peripheral Road (SPR): Infrastructure Status and Plans

SPR: what's built and what's next

The Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) is one of the arterial roads planned under the Gurugram–Manesar master plan to carry traffic across the southern sectors without going through the old city. Real estate marketing often calls it a "lifeline", and the corridor has certainly attracted large residential and commercial projects. This article, refreshed in October 2026, focuses on the infrastructure itself: what exists, what is under way, and what is still only planned.

Getting the route right

The original version of this article stated that SPR is "also known as Golf Course Extension Road" and that it starts from the Gurgaon–Faridabad road near Sector 58. That conflates two different roads:

  • Southern Peripheral Road (SPR): runs from NH-48 near the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf to Vatika Chowk on Sohna Road, passing Sectors 69 to 76 and nearby sectors.
  • Golf Course Extension Road (GCER): continues from Vatika Chowk north-east towards Ghata and Golf Course Road.

The two meet at Vatika Chowk, where an underpass now links them. Exact lengths quoted in marketing vary, so we have not repeated them.

What is already built

  • Vatika Chowk underpass: a 0.822 km underpass costing about Rs 109 crore, built by NHAI for GMDA, opened in November 2023. It lets traffic pass between SPR and GCER beneath the Sohna Road junction.
  • Sohna Elevated Corridor: the 21.65 km elevated highway from Rajiv Chowk to Sohna (part of NH-248A) fully opened in July 2022. It crosses SPR at Vatika Chowk and gives the corridor a faster route towards Sohna and back to central Gurgaon. The original article described it as "under construction"; it is complete.
  • Dwarka Expressway: its southern end meets NH-48 at a cloverleaf interchange, the same junction that SPR connects to and that the planned elevated SPR will reach. The expressway has been fully open since August 2025.

What is under way: the elevated SPR

Traffic on SPR's at-grade junctions has grown with every new society. GMDA's response is a phased elevated corridor:

PhaseScopeStatus (Oct 2026)
Phase 14.23 km elevated road, Vatika Chowk to the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf on NH-48, four lanes each way plus service roadsBids invited 1 October 2026 at about Rs 776 crore; bids close 18 November; 30 months to complete after award
Phase 2Grade-separated interchange at Vatika ChowkDPR under preparation
Phase 38.5 km elevated corridor towards GhataDPR under preparation

Phase 1 is intended to relieve seven junctions in Sectors 69 to 75A. An earlier Rs 755 crore tender floated in March 2026 was scrapped in June after the state sought changes, so timelines have already slipped once. Even if work is awarded on schedule, completion is unlikely before 2029.

What is proposed

  • Hero Honda Chowk link: a new arterial road linking Hero Honda Chowk to SPR near Sector 71 has been reported, with land issues said to be resolved. Confirm its status with GMDA before relying on it.
  • Metro: the proposed Sector 56–Panchgaon metro passes through Golf Course Extension Road sectors and Kherki Daula rather than along SPR itself. Its revised DPR was still being finalised in September 2026. Claims in the original about a metro "along SPR with five stations" could not be confirmed.

What this means for buyers

Construction disruption

Once elevated-road work starts, the junctions between Sectors 69 and 75A will see diversions and dust for two to three years. If you are buying a home that you will live in soon, factor that in, especially for towers right on the road.

Long-term benefit

A signal-free link from Vatika Chowk to NH-48 and the Dwarka Expressway should shorten trips across the southern sectors when complete. Societies close to the ramps may benefit most; those directly beside the elevated structure may face more noise.

Don't pay twice for the same road

Asking prices along SPR already reflect expectations of better connectivity. Our guides on SPR value vs execution risk and infrastructure premium vs hype explain how to tell whether a price already includes future infrastructure.

Check the approach road

Many projects along SPR are reached via sector roads or service lanes rather than directly from the main road. Visit at peak hours and after rain.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPR the same as Golf Course Extension Road?

No. SPR runs from NH-48 near the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf to Vatika Chowk on Sohna Road. Golf Course Extension Road continues from Vatika Chowk towards Ghata. An underpass at Vatika Chowk links the two.

When will the elevated SPR be built?

GMDA invited bids for Phase 1, Vatika Chowk to NH-48, in October 2026, with 30 months allowed after award. Completion is therefore unlikely before 2029, and later phases are still at DPR stage.

Is the Sohna elevated road complete?

Yes. The 21.65 km elevated corridor from Rajiv Chowk to Sohna fully opened in July 2022 and crosses SPR at Vatika Chowk.

Is there a metro on SPR?

No metro runs along SPR today. The proposed Sector 56–Panchgaon line follows a different alignment, and its revised DPR was still being finalised in September 2026.
